Sigmoidoscopy procedure:
- Examines the lower part of your colon (sigmoid colon and rectum) using a flexible tube with a camera (sigmoidoscope).
- Takes around 20 minutes.
- Doctor inserts the sigmoidoscope through your anus and inflates the colon with air for better viewing.
- Can remove polyps and take tissue samples if needed.
Uses of sigmoidoscopy:
- Diagnose causes of rectal bleeding, ulcers, and irregular bowel movements.
- Screen for colon and rectal cancer (doesn’t examine the entire colon unlike a colonoscopy).
Advantages of sigmoidoscopy:
- Quicker and less invasive than a colonoscopy.
- Usually doesn’t require anesthesia.
Risks of sigmoidoscopy:
- Minor bleeding after polyp removal.
- Dizziness, weakness, or pain (consult doctor if experienced).
